The Best Parks

Helsinki has many public parks that you can visit. The best time to visit the different parks in the city is in summer, but winter will have many beautiful snow lined walking paths to choose from.

Kaivopuisto: One of the largest open parks in the city. Great in the summertime to soak in some sunshine and get a sea breeze. A great spot to hang out with some friends after getting coffee and a pulla from a nearby cafe.

Helsingin keskuspuisto: Helsinki’s Central Park. Its a bit outside of the main downtown area, but just a quick bus ride away. One of the more difficult spots to get to, but a great forest experience for both Summer or Winter.

Mustikkamaan uimaranta: Blueberry Island is a beautiful island just off of the Kalasatama neighborhood. You get there easiest by metro to Redi mall and walk across the vaari silta (the grandpa bridge). Sompasauna is supposed to be moving there for the true Finnish sauna experience. The zoo is not far off and is worth a visit. Many walking paths that zig-zag across the island. Tennis, basketball, and a treetop experience all await on the island.

Ruoholahdenpuisto: The canal park in the Ruoholahti neighborhood. A nice spot to grab a drink and watch people walking around the canal or the small boats going through it. Very accessible from the metro. Very beautiful neighborhood scenery and could be a great spot for photography.

Haagan Alppiruusupuisto: This park in Haaga is the largest collection of rhodedendions in Finland. The bloom in early June is a very impressive sight and is a must see if you are visiting during this period.

Roihuvuori: A large park in the Herttoniemi neighborhood. The largest sakura cherry blossoms in Finland is in this park. There is a festival to mark the bloom in May that has many cool booths and Japanese demonstrations.

The Best Landmarks

No trip to Helsinki is complete without visiting the iconic landmarks. From awestriking Cathederals to strange Sculptures, there’s something amazing to see.

From there, head to the Temppeliaukio Church, also known as the Rock Church, which is carved directly into solid rock. Another must-see is the Sibelius Monument, dedicated to the famous Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, located in a beautiful park setting.

Delve into Local Culture and Cuisine

Immerse yourself in Helsinki’s local culture by visiting its numerous museums and galleries. The Ateneum Art Museum houses an extensive collection of Finnish artwork, while the National Museum of Finland provides a comprehensive overview of the country’s history. For food enthusiasts, the Old Market Hall is a great place to sample traditional Finnish delicacies like salmon soup and Karelian pastries.
